“With only twelve seats in this tranquil dining room, guests can watch Chef Yoshihara as he prepares his tempura dishes. A real highlight of Tempura Hajime is the wait staff, who politely explain the dishes to you, and walk you through the experience..

“This is not a place for loud chatter, or a boisterous evening with friends, rather it is a serene and unique experience, one of the most authentically Japanese in the city.”

2018 – 2 Chef Hats
“Owner/chef Shigeo Yoshihara moved from Osaka to Australia in 2004, and he brings more than two decades of culinary experience to the dishes at Tempura Hajime. One of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in Melbourne, it is a quiet oasis with only 12 seats. They are arranged in a semicircle overlooking two cooking stations where disciplined and precise chefs serve up delicacies to an appreciative clientele.”

2017 – 2 Chef Hats
“Shigeo Yoshihara is both the owner of and the Head Chef at this incredibly authentic establishment offering classic Japanese fare.
The menu is driven by the ingredients and the skill of Chef Yoshihara, who cooks right in front of diners. The dining room seats only 12 people, so the atmosphere is intimate and special. Diners sit in a semicircle around the open kitchen, and there is little in the way of room decoration to distract diners from the culinary theater in front of them.”

“The dishes showcase the finest tempura skills and interesting ingredients.”

2016 – 2 Chef Hats
“Born in Osaka and with two decades of experience, Shigeo Yoshihara brings a touch of authentic Japan to Melbourne taking the freshest of produce and cooking it to perfection right before your eyes.”
